April 10 | Sunday - pre-concert workshop
Join us to explore what lies "behind the scenes" of the three traditions
featured in the evening concert (following at 7:30pm also at West County
Herb).
We'll learn, in an enjoyable and accessible way, from
Eliyahu Sills (reed flutes and oud) and Jason Ranjit Parmar (tabla and
percussion) about the foundations of the rhythms, melodies, scales, and
approaches to improvisation in the music of Turkey, Northern India and
North Afric...a.
They will share the cultural and spiritual aspects of the music as
well, to give us greater insight into the context from which it springs.
Through
musical demonstrations and explanations, Eliyahu and Ranjit will help
you understand how the music is constructed, what effects the different
Ragas & Makams (musical modes in Indian & Middle Eastern music)
are said to have, and how to count and feel some of the interesting
rhythms that will be performed in the concert. Participants will also
have an opportunity to sing some of the chants (illahis), and with
guidance, some of musical concepts.
No need to be a trained
musician or singer...the idea is to learn enough to deepen your
experience of what you hear later, during the concert itself. Dive in!
(Partially
underwritten by the California Folklife Project, "intercultural
understanding through the arts," a (501c3) non-profit, tax exempt
organization. Bhavani Judith Cook Tucker, Executive Director)
After
dinner on your own in Occidental, using your special "Explorers
Discount" coupon for local restaurants, you'll have priority seating for
the concert itself.

The Ecstatic Soul
A night of ecstatic poetry and sacred music with
Michael Meade & The Qadim Ensemble
Portland OR, 7:00 pm
First Unitarian Church, 1121 Main St
You are invited to an evening of ecstatic poetry and sacred music, a combined song that voices the longings of the heart and whispers the nature of the soul. In dark and troubled times ancient peoples turned to the poets and mystics, not to escape reality, but to find solace, understanding, and inspiration. The mystics say that something that turns within us helps to make the world turn. They say that there is a "light seed grain inside; you fill it with yourself, or it dies." Come fill yourself with poetry and music.

In dark and troubled times, ancient peoples turned to the poets and mystics to find solace, understanding, and inspiration. Those old "knowers" knew that whenever we are lost or "at a loss", the soul is nearby. For the soul finds its way by touching darkness and releasing the hidden light. "Allow dark times to season you," says Hafiz. Rumi advises that somehow "your own desire will find an opening."
